Silver in its pure state so soft that it is not used in jewelry making. To make it hard, silver is often mixed with copper.
All high quality silver items are stamped with a "Sterling Silver " or ".925" mark.
As the purity of the silver decreases, the problem of tarnishing increases. Chemically, silver is not very reactive — it does not react with water or oxygen at ordinary temperatures, so does not easily form a silver oxide. However, the other metal in the alloy, usually copper, may react with oxygen in the air.
